Corsica Day 7

On Saturday we drove. We headed from our place near Porto Vecchio on the southeast side of the island to our second place near Cargese on the western side of the island. On the way, we stopped in Sartene for lunch. Sartene is situated on the hilltops inland in Corsica. Being the not Catholic, we didn’t realize that it was Assumption Day (and apparently also market day?), and the town was brimming with people. It was not brimming with parking. Tim dropped Maya and I off right near the main square, and we enjoyed a cappuccino and an Orangina while he and Amy searched for spots for the cars. When I asked later, Amy reported, “Oh, the cars are definitely parked illegally. But they’re parked.” We had lunch at a spot that served local Sartenese food (I’m still not quite sure what that means), strolled a bit, then continued our drive.

Our new “apartment” is actually a small standalone house. The proprietors are a lovely local couple. He speaks French and less Italian than Tim and I (though he is quite proud of his few Italian words). She speaks some Italian and lots of French (we think), though she speaks a combination of the two in some very rapid and fluid language. Between Amy’s Italian and my (poor) French, we think we were able to successfully communicate with them. The apartment is a bit smaller but has basically as much functional space (minus a shower) as the first apartment. It has a nice view of the ocean and some great sea breezes.

Tim threw together a delicious dinner based on the leftovers we’d brought with us (pasta and steak and green beans) and then we tucked in.
