Corsica Day 10

This was a day for the adults. The kids had some fun, too, but it was mostly a day of driving through majestic scenery of Corsica. It was beautiful. We headed out in the morning to drive to Corte, which is a couple of hours away. From Corte, a 15km dead end road winds through the Restonica Gorge. We drove in a few kilometers before stopping alongside the river to have a picnic lunch. I hobbled what seemed like miles (it was probably about 15 meters) to the rocks to sit. The big kids played on the river rocks for a long time. The little kids were satisfied with jumping off of the little rocks. After lunch, we drove the rest of the way into the gorge, dodging cows in the road along the way. As you can see, the views are breathtaking. Amy’s driving task was a harrowing one.

From Corte, we drove back towards our apartment via the Niolo, a mountainous and forested region. The scenery is so different than the arid land around our apartment, which is just bewildering since they’re so relatively close to one another. It rained a bit on us during this drive, so we didn’t get out of the car as much, but the rain also made the pines and ferns greener and more beautiful, so it wasn’t unwelcome. The temperature also dropped to 15 degrees during this drive (from near 30 on other parts of the day). We were dodging cows and pigs and goats again all along this drive. We all got out to see the view of the ocean through a gorge. This required a longer walk on my crutches than is probably advised (including several “steps” down through rocks and roots), but it was worth it.

We finished the drive into Porto, where we had dinner at a too-fancy restaurant. It was too fancy for our kids, really, and, while the food was good, they were trying too hard. The best two meals we’ve had have been randomly discovered restaurants along the side of the road outside of the major towns. I don’t know if we’ll get so lucky again…
