Adjectives are important

Maya: ♫ Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O ♪ Hey Mom, tell me an animal.

Me: Monkey.

Maya: OK. ♫ On that farm he had a monkey, E-I-E-I-O. With a... ♪ Hey Mom, that's not an animal. Tell me an ANIMAL.

Me: Giraffe.

Maya: OK. ♫ On that farm... ♪ Hey Mom, that's not an animal EITHER. Tell me an ANIMAL.

Me: Maya, you know monkeys and giraffes are animals, right?

Maya: No they're not, they're ZOO animals.

Me: Maya, zoo animals ARE animals.

Maya: Oh. [pause] Mom, tell me a FARM animal.

That's better...

Bedtime!

We've been telling Maya that when the little hand is on the 8 and the big hand is pointing straight up, it's bedtime. She has fun trying to recognize that pattern on the clock now. Tonight, Tim told her that, but at 7:40, she yelled, in quite an agitated manner, "Daddy, it's pointing to the 8!!!" Tim explained to her what she was really waiting for. He told her she could go ahead and go to bed if she wanted, but she chose no.

Go Texas!

Whenever Maya sees a longhorn logo now, she gives a "Go Texas" shout. We all went to the UT/CU basketball game last week. Maya was (obviously) not following the game much (in fact, until we got there, I think she was convinced we were going to watch daddy play again). But she did sit still most of the time and attempt to pay attention. And she liked to keep an eye out for the cow...

Veggies!

So we're trying out a CSA program (http://www.jbgorganic.com). Here are the contents of our first box. We just got the second one yesterday (we're very proud of ourselves for actually finishing all of the vegetables). We're getting to try some new things, and things we don't eat very often, too. This week we have lots of super sweet carrots. Yum.

Burnet

On our last day of holiday vacation, we decided to take a little day trip up towards Burnet, TX. It's about an hour from here. We specifically went to Longhorn Cavern State Park and to Fall Creek Winery. Grandma Holman drove from Killeen to meet us (Burnet is about equidistant from each of us). The cavern was really neat. We went on about a 1.5 mile tour through the cavern, and we saw a great variety of formations inside. Our tour guide was great; he had the perfect balance of interesting stories and letting us wander through the cave at a leisurely pace. After the cave, we had a chilly picnic (I don't think it reached 50 today) and then drove to the Fall Creek Winery (another 40 minutes or so, around what would be Lake Buchanan if we weren't in a massive drought). The winery was deserted, so we got a private tour from a great tour guide. I now know much more about the chemistry of making wine. We then tasted some wine (he was even gracious enough to suggest that Maya "taste" her Sprite in a wine glass...that he then let her keep). And of course we came away with some wine. The winery looks like it would be a great place to go in the spring or a cooler summer day for a picnic and a leisurely glass of wine.

I'm a Toy!

The other morning Maya took all of her things out of her (small) toy box in our room, got in it and declared, "I'm a toy!" In trying to get a better picture of it, we asked her to be really still like a statue. Apparently, that means something specific...
