Two notes on how amazingly observant a four year old can be:
The first: brand marketing. We went into a store here in Trento. The store is a chain clothing store, and we'd been to the store in Merano a month or so ago. Maya said, "Mom, we've been here before. No, wait... we've been in a store just like this one before." She told me she recognized it from the photos of the models behind the cash register.
The second: gelato. After Maya went to bed last night, Tim slipped out. While I was doing dishes:
Maya: "Mom?" (calling from her room)
Me: "Yes?"
Maya: "Did dad leave?"
Me: "Yes."
Maya: "Where did he go?"
Me: "For a walk." (This is not a lie. He went for a walk to the gelato store.)
Maya: "OK."
This morning, noticing the two napkins from the gelato store by the couch:
Maya: "Mom, what are these doing here?"
Me: "Hm. Daddy must have thought I was messy and handed them to me." (This is also not a lie.)
Maya: (suspiciously) "OK."
Me: (in distraction mode) "Could you do me a favor and put them on the table? Then let's get your coat on..."
