King's Castles

Yesterday, we visited the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. We took a (guided) tour of each (no photos), did some walking around the area for the views. The second (larger) of these two castles is Neuschwanstein, which is also supposedly the inspiration for the Disney logo castle.

Hohenshchwangua had some nice grounds with fountains (Maya's favorite) and the king's bedroom had stars painted on the ceiling. Holes had been cut in the ceiling, and lights could be placed in the third story to shine through.

Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludwig II to venerate medieval times. In this castle, there are a lot of "extras" since its construction was largely whimsical. There's even a full on indoor cave.

After leaving the castles, we stopped by a grocery store for some lunch fixings, then started the drive to Bamberg. On the way, we swung by the Pilgrimage Church of Weis. It was pretty and just off the road; not necessarily so amazing it would be worth an extra trip.

We arrived in Bamberg to rain. We wandered around a bit just to find dinner (more schnitzel!).
