On Saturday, we decided to take a drive north to Rittner Horn. We have a car now for the remainder of our time in Italy, and we thought it best to take immediate advantage of it. We invited the Piccos to join us for a picnic at the top. This required driving about an hour from Trento then taking a very nice cable car up to the top. In the end we were at about 2200m of elevation. We had a picnic lunch, but it was chillier than we had anticipated so our family at least was under-dressed. We ate at a spot that usually affords 270 degree views of impressive Dolomite mountains, today the clouds were very pretty. After picnicking, the kids played a bit on the playground and then we started the 5km walk down (instead of taking the cable car). However, after about 100m, we turned around and noticed the thundercloud following us while almost simultaneously receiving a text from a friend back in Trento reporting on the hail storm. We opted to head back up to the cable car and take the easy way out.
