Porto: Wednesday

Christine presented her paper at the conference on Wednesday, apparently that meant she had to go. I took the girls to the electric tram museum in the morning. The history of the tram system in Porto is really interesting, probably. I was just looking to entertain the girls. They had fun exploring the trams, I took some pictures.

For lunch we wandered toward the World of Discoveries museum and picked a hole in the wall place nearby. It was the first place we had been with no English (menu or spoken). For 6 euros (which was the only option) you got soup, salad, rice, fries, a drink, and your choice of meat (chicken, pork chop, cod fritter, octopus, some other fish, some other meat, and something else in Portuguese). We didn't get soup.

After lunch we headed into the World of Discoveries Interactive Museum and Theme Park, which was pretty cool if not quite as grandiose as the name. We interacted with several rooms of touch screen displays and exhibits explaining Portugal's many naval exploits and trade partnerships. Then we boarded a "boat" that took us through an animatronic wonderland (It's a Small World style) of Portuguese history. Turns out the Japanese word arigato, Portugal did that. The word Brazil, Portuguese for on fire, 'cause the trees are red.

We met Christine back at the hotel then headed out to walk along Rua Santa Catarina (fancy shopping street). I bought some shoes.

We headed to a traditional Portuguese restaurant with good reviews called Antunes. It was pretty fantastic. Christine and I shared a roasted pig knee and for dessert I had "bacon from heaven". The girls had salmon and tuna, respectively, but let me reiterate, I had "bacon from heaven" for dessert.
