Palio delle Contrade Città di Trento

This weekend is the annual Palio in Trento, which brings out medieval drums, flags, archers, and tradespeople. Saturday was a bit overcast, rainy, and chilly, but we braved the weather to see the festivities. In the morning, we stepped out of our apartment and, within a block, were pushed to the sidewalk by a parade of drums and flags. In the city center, we saw a spindle turner, some candlemakers, some jewelers, a leatherworker, metal workers in general, etc. We watched some practice archery for a bit (including some kids) before heading back to the apartment for lunch and naps. Many of Tim's photos from the morning were just street scenes of Trento unrelated to the Palio, but they're great!

After the rest, we went back out and met the Piccos. We watched some actual archery competitions, some more drums and flags, and some fire jugglers before the rain set in. We grabbed a bite to eat and then headed home. On Sunday morning, we woke up with the girls asking for a repeat, so we headed in to see the morning organized flag and drum show. We intended to head back for the archery competition in the afternoon, but a phone call invitation to Lago di Levico changed those plans...
