[Updated with more information about the photos.]
In the afternoon, we went to Fribourg, which is just 25 minutes from Bern on the train, but suddenly everything switched from German to French. It was really incredible. It wasn't like German was suddenly spoken less... We heard almost exclusively French (and English) in Fribourg, while we had heard almost exclusively German (and English) in Bern. Incredible. Anyway, Fribourg was a lovely town. We thought it much more picturesque the Bern, and it was a lot less crowded with visitors. We wandered the town, went into the church and up the church tower, and Tim walked up a long hill to an old church. As you can see from the photographs, it was a really lovely visit. After an exhausted (on my part) dinner of pizza, we caught the train back to Zurich. That last photo is a night shot of the Grossmunster in Zurich.
Steeples in Fribourg.
Cathedrale Saint Nicolas in Fribourg.
From the top of the tower of the cathedral. We both climbed up this one. I regretted it later.
Fountain in Fribourg.
Another fountain.
The view from the other side of the river.
Chappelle de Lorette (the little building to the right in the trees) and the Porte de Bourguillon. Tim got up there later...
Looking under the bridge.
Pont de Berne, a covered wooden bridge that spans the river. We had to dodge cars as we crossed it.
Wildflowers growing out of a rock face.
The Porte de Bourgillon and Chapelle de Lorette again. Getting closer.
Back to the cathedral across the river.
A monastery.
Closer still... that's the Chapelle in the front and the Porte in the back...
Another fountain (and Eglise de St. Jean),
Back to the cathedral from across some fields.
A little chapel in the field.
The cathedral from afar.
Finally at the Chapelle de Lorette.
Two women contemplating Fribourg.
A rest.
A bird.
Christine's picture. It's lovely, right?
And a finished walk up the hill.
Zurich (the Grossmunster) at night. Tim thinks this shot is too blurry (taken with his iPhone).
