We woke on our last day in Rome with a purpose. To Saint Peter's Basilica or bust. Maya and I put our best smiles on and we set out. Maya was a real trouper. She really just wanted to lay in bed and read, but she put a smile on her face and said "I don't want you guys to miss things because of me." So we arrived at Saint Peter's Square. Look, an obelisk!
And the partially obscured dome...
What you can't see in Tim's well-cropped pictures are the hundreds upon hundreds of people standing in "line" to get in. It was a complete mob scene, and, while we stood in the line for a few minutes, it was clear that it was going to be hours and that our party was really not up for it.
So we headed to get some brioche and coffee.
We discussed the merits of walking to see Castel Sant'Angelo (we had skipped it on Monday because it was closed Mondays), but Maya really just wasn't up for it. So we headed back to our apartment, relaxed for a bit, then had a delicious lunch at a little restaurant just around the corner from our apartment. While waiting on lunch we wandered and played in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
After lunch, we headed to the train station and then back to Trento.
