Gran Canaria: Monday

Today I was at my conference. After attempting to drop me off at the conference hotel (but giving up 3 blocks away and letting me walk... apparently you are SUPPOSED to drive on the sidewalk), Tim took the car and drove to Caldera de Bandama, a large volcanic crater not far out of town. These are the vistas you see in the photos below. He then put the car in the parking garage and walked up to meet me in the northern part of the city. He killed some time wandering around along the coast, then we had a leisurely late lunch and walked back south. After a quick stop at the hotel to drop of stuff (like a best paper award...), we continued on south to the old parts of town, where we saw the massive cathedral and associated museum and the Casa Museo de Colon ("Museum House of Columbus"), which has a bunch of information about Columbus's stops here and artifacts from the new world. We strolled back along the main shopping street to the hotel to rest up before heading out for a (sigh) late dinner. We're going to try the restaurant that was closed yesterday...

A best paper award...that's great! (And deserving of more than a parenthetical comment.)

Looks like a beautiful trip so far. The dunes from day one look really interesting, but I have no idea how you forced yourself to drive in a foreign country and hike in the sand after no sleep and an uncomfortable airplane experience. You are some tough travelers.
